Humanitarian Efforts at the USGS National Wetlands Research Center

Federal employees and contractors at the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) have been contributing what they can to offer relief to victims of Hurricane Katrina. Employees from the center are housing 50-60 family members and friends escaping the destructon of the storm. The center has also posted contact information for employees who are willing to house visiting medical staff to treat the hurricane victims in local hospitals.

Debbie Norling is spearheading a drive at NWRC to collect urgently needed food, clothing, toiletries, money, water, medical supplies, and “everything needed to sustain life.” Norling has sorted an ever-growing stock of clothes, blankets, and pillows which will be given to the Salvation Army for distribution to evacuees.

Monetary contributions from staff members will be specifically earmarked for the relief of Hurricane Katrina evacuees and donated to the Red Cross. Individual contributions have already amounted to a few hundred dollars, and an additional $1,000 will be donated by the NWRC employee association, FOSSCL.

Norling, who is a board member of FOSSCL, will direct other contributions, such as baby formula, non-perishable foods, soap, deodorant, and shampoo to FoodNet. FoodNSet will then distribute those materials to evacuees in shelters and families that have suffered losses from the destruction of Hurricane Katrina.

Also in response to the hurricane, Our Lady of Lourdes hospital will hold a blood drive at NWRC on Friday, September 16. As more information becomes available, the center will continue to post notices about services for evacuees and calls for volunteers from various humanitarian organizations.
