Seminar on Louisiana’s Coastal Wetlands to be held at the USGS National Wetlands Research Center

LAFAYETTE, La. The public is invited to attend a presentation, "The Basin and the Coast" by the Louisiana Wildlife Federation’s Chris Macaluso at the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Wetlands Research Center at 700 Cajundome Blvd. in Lafayette on October 21, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. The event is being held as a component of Experience Atchafalaya Days.

Chris Macaluso, the Coastal Outreach Coordinator from the Louisiana Wildlife Federation, will cover coastal habitat loss and how navigation and flood control projects throughout the Mississippi River Basin, including the Atchafalaya Basin, have drastically altered Louisiana’s wetlands. The presentation will include details about efforts to reintroduce water and sediments from the Atchafalaya Basin into the imperiled wetlands in western Terrebonne Parish to curb coastal land loss and saltwater intrusion.

Macaluso recently joined the Louisiana Wildlife Federation after spending the last four years as the public information director for the Governor’s Office of Coastal Activities as well as the Louisiana Office of Coastal Protection and Restoration.

Experience Atchafalaya Days, sponsored by the Friends of the Atchafalaya and the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area in the Louisiana Office of Tourism, runs the month of October and is designed to educate people about recreational opportunities and the natural and cultural resources of the 14 parish area that comprises the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area.
