NWRC Staff Participates in CWPPRA Task Force Meeting: USGS NWRC Director Phil Turnipseed, Branch Chief and CWPPRA Public Outreach Committee Chairman Scott Wilson, Ecologist Kate Spear, CWPPRA Outreach Coordinator and Five Rivers Education Specialist Susan Testroet-Bergeron, and CWPPRA Media Specialist and NWRC contractor Cole Ruckstuhl will participate in the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act Task Force meeting in Lafayette, Louisiana, on June 4. Testroet-Bergeron will present the outreach committee’s quarterly report to the Task Force. (Scott Wilson; Lafayette, La.; 337-266-8644)

New Orleans / Lake Pontchartrain Urban Waters Initiative: On June 5-6, USGS NWRC Geographer Scott Hemmerling will participate in an EPA-led face-to-face meeting with Federal leads in the Urban Waters Federal Partnership. Hemmerling is transitioning into the point-of-contact role for the USGS, currently held by USGS NWRC Director Phil Turnipseed. Hemmerling will update the group about NWRC’s ongoing work with the University of New Orleans Shea Penland Coastal Education and Research Facility and development of a real-time graphical user interface for the project. The Lake Pontchartrain Urban Waters Federal Partnership Pilot Project supports local restoration efforts. Federal partners work with the City of New Orleans, other interested municipalities, Louisiana State agencies, and local non-governmental organizations to facilitate projects that reconstruct and restore local ecosystems.
