  • Minden High Nature Club To Visit NWRC: Students from the Minden High Nature Club will tour the USGS National Wetlands Research Center to learn about Louisiana’s wetlands and research being performed at the center on February 18, 2011. (Tom Doyle; Lafayette, La.; 337-266-8647)

  • NWRC Ecologist to Install SETs in Mangroves in Singapore: USGS National Wetlands Research Center Ecologist, Nicole Cormier, will travel to Singapore February 21–March 4, 2011, to work with researchers at the National University of Singapore. They will install Sedimentation Elevation Tables (SETs) in mangrove forests vulnerable to sea level rise and urbanization. While visiting the university, Cormier will give a talk to the Singapore-Delft Water Alliance titled "Fine root productivity varies along nitrogen, phosphorus, and stress gradients in high-rainfall mangrove forests."   • NWRC Director Attends South Central Area Meeting: D. Phil Turnipseed, NWRC Director, attended the South Central Area meeting held in Lawrence, Kansas, February 15–16, 2011.  Discussion focused on FY11 and FY 12 budgets. (D. Phil Turnipseed; Lafayette, La.; 337-266-8501)

  • NWRC Deputy Director Attends Cooperative Research Unit Annual Meeting: Matthew Andersen, NWRC Deputy Director, attended the USGS Louisiana Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit’s annual staff meeting located on the Louisiana State University campus in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, February 16, 2011.  Participants reviewed the Co-op unit’s past and planned research programs.  Sammy King is the Unit Leader.   • NWRC Participates in Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority Meeting: Matthew Andersen, NWRC Deputy Director, and Tom Doyle, Branch Chief, attended the State of Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority’s (CPRA) meeting held in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, February 16, 2011.  The 2012 Atchafalaya Basin Annual Plan was approved and will be forwarded to the Louisiana State Legislature.   • Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility Presentation: Myron H. Brooks with the USGS Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility (HIP) located at the Stennis Space Center, Mississippi, gave a presentation on their capabilities and services to NWRC staff on February 17, 2011.
