  • NWRC Geographer Participates in CMECS Federal Register Meeting: USGS National Wetlands Research Center Geographer Larry Handley participated, as a member of the Implementation Group, in the Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification System (CMECS) meeting on January 10 – 11, 2011, in New Orleans. The meeting was held to review and answer Federal Register comments in preparation of the CMECS being implemented as a Federal Geographic Data Committee classification standard for coastal nearshore and offshore habitats.   • NWRC Geographer Participates in CMECS Water Column Component Workshop: USGS National Wetlands Research Center Geographer Larry Handley participated in a Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification System (CMECS) Water Column Component workshop in New Orleans January 12 – 14, 2011.  The workshop, sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, will develop a framework for water column classification that can be incorporated into the Federal Geographic Data Committee CMECS standard.   • USGS and OCPR Hold Joint Training: USGS National Wetlands Research Center staff Craig Conzelmann and Sarai Piazza and contractor Marc Comeaux will lead a joint USGS and Louisiana Office of Coastal Protection and Restoration (OCPR) training session on January 18, 2011 at the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources in Baton Rouge, La.  The training will be provided to personnel from Louisiana's Coastal Parishes and will focus on recent updates to both the Coastwide Reference Monitoring System (CRMS) and OCPR SONRIS websites. Demonstrations on how to download restoration project monitoring data, engineering data, geospatial data, and new data releases will be presented. (Sarai Piazza; Baton Rouge, La.; 225-578-7044)

  • Industry Leaders to Tour NWRC: Local industry leaders targeted by the Louisiana Department of Economic Development’s Blue Ocean Strategy will tour the USGS National Wetlands Research Center on January 20, 2011, to learn more about the Center’s work. The industry leaders are participating in a meeting being held by Acadiana Economic Development. (Gabrielle Bodin; Lafayette, La.; 337-266-8655)

  • Amy Wold of The Advocate (Baton Rouge, La.) interviewed Clint Jeske on January 7, 2011, and Karen McKee on January 10 for a general overview update story about the impacts from the Deepwater Horizon incident.
