  • NWRC Scientist To Report on Collaborative Research Projects to National Level of the Chinese Academy of Science: USGS National Wetlands Research Center scientist Beth Middleton and Jiang Ming of Key Laboratory in Wetland Ecology in Changchun, China, will address the Chinese Academy of Science in Beijing, China, on May 3, 2010. The title of their presentation is “Wetland restoration projects on the Sanjiang and Mississippi River Floodplains.”  Middleton and Jiang are working on collaborative research projects, and their presentation is a report to the national level Chinese Academy of Science. Middleton is currently on special assignment with the Key Laboratory of Wetland Ecology in Changchun, China. (Beth Middleton; Lafayette, La.; 337-266-8618)

  • NWRC Scientist Addresses Students of the Chinese Academy of Science: USGS National Wetlands Research Center scientist Beth Middleton will address the graduate students of the Northeast Institute of Geography and Agriculture of the Chinese Academy of Science on April 20, 2010.  The title of her presentation is “Student guide to science writing.” She is currently on special assignment with the Key Laboratory of Wetland Ecology in Changchun, China.   • USGS Scientists from Louisiana and Texas Meet to Explore Cooperative Ventures: Scientists from the USGS National Wetlands Research Center and the USGS Texas Water Science Center (Houston office) met on April 20, 2010, at NWRC to exchange ideas and present information concerning their relevant projects to facilitate interactions and cooperative ventures among the two groups. Mike Turco, Jeanette Oudin and Mike Lee of the TWSC joined Janine Powell, Tom Doyle, Elijah Ramsey, Tommy Michot, Hardin Waddle, Rebecca Howard, Clint Jeske, Steve Hartley and Jacoby Carter of NWRC for the meeting.   • NWRC Scientists To Participate in Louisiana Remote Sensing and GIS Workshop: Staff from the Gulf Coast Joint Venture based at the USGS National Wetlands Research Center will also participate in the 26th Annual Louisiana Remote Sensing and GIS Workshop April 27 – 29, 2010, at the Cajundome Convention Center in Lafayette, La., in addition to several scientists from NWRC listed in last week’s report. Mark Parr will present "Status Update of the Gulf Coast Joint Venture Managed Lands Geodatabase" and an associated poster/map, along with another poster entitled "Sea level rise and implications for conservation of forest habitat for migrant landbirds along the Texas Gulf Coast."   • Breaux Bridge 4-H Students To Visit NWRC: Approximately 54 fourth through eighth grade students from the Breaux Bridge, La., 4-H program will visit the USGS National Wetlands Research Center on April 29, 2010. The students will view a presentation about Louisiana’s coastal wetlands and tour the center to learn about USGS research. (Gabrielle Bodin; Lafayette, La.; 337-266-8655)

  • South Street Elementary Students To Visit NWRC: Approximately 46 third grade students from the South Street Elementary in Opelousas, La.,  will visit the USGS National Wetlands Research Center on April 30, 2010. The students will view a presentation about Louisiana’s coastal wetlands and tour the center to learn about USGS research. The school received a grant focused on writing and wetlands.   • NWRC To Participate in Lafayette Middle School Earth Day Celebration: Staff from the USGS National Wetlands Research Center will staff an educational booth at the Lafayette Middle School (LMS) Earth Day Celebration on May 1, 2010.
