Departmental/Bureau News - Upcoming

  • NWRC Scientist To Serve on Editorial Board: USGS National Wetlands Research Center scientist Karen McKee has been invited to serve on the editorial board of Hydrobiologia, an international journal publishing research in earth and environmental sciences, hydrobiology, and ecology.  McKee will serve a 3-year term and handle manuscripts in the topic areas of mangrove and marsh biology and ecology. (Karen McKee, Lafayette, La., 337-266-8662)

  • NWRC Outreach Project Leader To Present Coastal Wetland Information to Rotary Club: USGS National Wetlands Research Center contractor Gabrielle Bodin will give an invited presentation to approximately 60 members of Lafayette Rotary South in Lafayette, La., on September 2, 2009. The presentation will cover Louisiana coastal wetlands functions and values, loss and restoration. Many Federal, State, and local agencies, including USGS, as well as non-profit organizations, are working to conserve and restore Louisiana’s rapidly vanishing coastal wetlands. (Gabrielle B. • NWRC Scientists Present Papers at Ecological Meeting in Australia: USGS National Wetlands Research Center scientists Karen McKee and Ken Krauss presented papers at the 10th International Congress of Ecology in Brisbane, Australia, August 16-21, 2009. McKee gave a paper entitled “Biogenic contributions to soil expansion in coastal wetlands” in an invited symposium, Nutrient Enrichment and Climate Change in Coastal Wetlands. Krauss presented a paper entitled “Tidal freshwater forested wetlands, marsh, and climate change: a potential role for nitrogen” in the same symposium. Prior to the conference, McKee conducted research in mangrove ecosystems along the south Queensland coast. (Karen McKee, Lafayette, La., 337-266-8662)

  • NWRC Seminar Series Features Talk on Southwestern Riparian Ecosystems: Jere Boudell of Clayton State University in Atlanta, Ga., presented a seminar on August 21, 2009 at the USGS National Wetlands Research Center on "Metacommunity dynamics in southwestern riparian ecosystems: a synthetic approach." The talk described species regeneration in southwestern riparian forests, specifically looking at the role of seed dispersal via floodpulsing and its role in metacommunity dynamics.
