  • NWRC Hosts Multi-agency Brown Marsh 2009 Briefing: USGS National Wetlands Research Center branch chief Thomas Doyle hosted a Brown Marsh 2009 Briefing on July 9, 2009 at the NWRC facility in Lafayette, La. The purpose of the meeting was to scope the scale and severity of “Brown Marsh” in coastal Louisiana in 2009. Understanding “Brown Marsh” phenomenon may be critically important to the success of future coastal restoration under rising sea-levels and changing climate.   • NWRC Scientists Participate in the LCA Science Summer 2009 Meeting: USGS National Wetlands Research Center branch chief Scott Wilson and scientist Greg Steyer participated in the multi-agency Louisiana Coastal Area (LCA) Science Board Summer 2009 Meeting July 15, 2009 in Baton Rouge, La. Wilson presented “A Data and Information Gap Analysis Tool (DIGIT) To Support SWAMP - A System-Wide Assessment and Monitoring Plan,” and Steyer presented recommendations concerning the Coastal Louisiana Ecosystem Assessment and Restoration (CLEAR) Conceptual Ecological Models/Modules workshop.   • Freelance print journalist Rusty Middleton spoke with USGS National Wetlands Research Center scientist Wiley Barrow on July 2, 2009 about his work in radar ornithology. Middleton is developing an article proposal for Audubon or Smithsonian magazines.

  • USGS National Wetlands Research Center scientist John McCoy provided environmental writer Erik Ness with requested information regarding the reforestation of the Mollicy Unit of the Upper Ouachita National Wildlife Refuge located in Morehouse Parish, La.
