Notable Congressional Activity

  • NWRC Provides Digital Map Files to Senator Landrieu: The USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) was contacted by the USGS Congressional Affairs Office to respond to a request from Senator Landrieu’s office on June 17, 2009. NWRC provided high resolution digital files of three maps (Drainage Basins of the World, Elevation of the World, and Ramsar Wetlands of the World) appearing on the Delta Research and Global Observation Network (DRAGON) Web site and a list of U.S. deltas, which the NWRC library provided.   • USGS National Wetlands Research Center Director Gregory Smith’s interview with Bruce Brown of the Lafayette Advertiser was published online on June 12, 2009. Acting Assistant Center Director Gaye Farris and Branch Chief Scott Wilson were also quoted in the story.

  • On June 16, Virginia Burkett, USGS Chief Scientist for Global Change Research, participated in the White House press conference on the release of the report entitled “Global Climate Change Impacts in the United States.”  She was subsequently interviewed by Jim Bruggers (Courier-Journal, Louisville, Ky.), Seth Borenstein (AP), Nikki Buskey (Houma Daily Courier), and Steve Nash (free lance writer, Bioscience and Blue Ridge Magazine). Borenstein’s story appears in several online news outlets; below are links to a few of them.
