  • USGS Participates in Dam Safety Coordinators Conference: On April 16, USGS geographer Steve Hartley spoke at the DOI Dam Safety Coordinators Conference in New Orleans, LA. Hartley discussed the USGS response to Hurricane Katrina which included assisting State and Federal agencies with humanitarian aid and geospatial analyses in support of search and rescue operations as well as measuring and assessing damages to coastal areas and infrastructure along the Louisiana and Mississippi coasts.

  • USGS Celebrates Earth Day in Louisiana: USGS and contractor staff members from the USGS National Wetlands Research Center participated in two events celebrating Earth Day. On April 17, researchers talked to students on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette about wetlands and the center’s work on birds and coastal habitats. The other event, Louisiana Earth Day, was held April 20 in Baton Rouge and is one of the Nation’s largest environmental festivals. USGS along with other governmental agencies and environmental groups offered information and creative hands-on environmental education activities under the Wetlands Tent.   • USGS scientist Randy Westbrooks was interviewed April 14 by the Bloomberg News (Dallas, TX) about the invasive plant Giant Salvinia in Caddo Lake, which is on the Texas-Louisiana border.
