USGS Scientist Participates in Congressional Tour of Caddo Lake: On August 29, USGS scientist Randy Westbrooks took part in a boat tour of Caddo Lake hosted by U.S. Congressman (TX) Louie Gohmert. Representative Gohmert discussed the impacts of giant salvinia, an invasive aquatic weed that is spreading rapidly in portions of the Lake. Westbrooks, an Invasive Species Prevention Specialist, is working closely with the Caddo Lake Giant Salvinia Task Force to provide information and technical assistance for the early detection of and rapid response to the infestation of this noxious weed. Others attending the tour included local staff from U.S. Congressman (LA) Jim McCrery’s office, members of the Caddo Lake Institute, the Caddo Lake Giant Salvinia Task Force, representatives from other Federal and State agencies, and members of the press. USGS Scientist Speaks on Nutria Research Program: On August 21, USGS scientist Jacoby Carter spoke to the Lafayette (LA) Lions Club about the USGS Nutria Research Program, the history of this invasive species in the United States, and his study of the nutria in an urban setting.
