USGS and Gulf Coast Joint Venture Discuss a Shared Vision: On July 25, USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) director Greg Smith hosted a meeting in Lafayette, LA, attended by biologists from the Gulf Coast Joint Venture (GCJV), a conservation partnership, and USGS scientists. Through presentations and discussions, both groups gained a better understanding of the priorities and capabilities of each office and how USGS and GCJV can work together to successfully implement the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Strategic Habitat Conservation initiative for birds along the Gulf Coast. (Gaye Farris, 337-266-8550, Lafayette, LA)

USGS geographer John Barras contributed land loss imagery before and after Katrina for a story in National Geographic Magazine. The story, “New Orleans: A Perilous Future” by Joel Bourne was published in the August 2007 edition of the magazine or online at

USGS librarian Linda Broussard provided information on images of the Louisiana landscape in the 1930’s and 1940’s for a documentary on World War II being prepared by New York Public Television for airing in September.
