Former USGS Scientist Receives 2007 Coastal Stewardship Award: At a May 11 ceremony in Baton Rouge, LA, retired USGS scientist Jimmy Johnston will be honored for his commitment to the preservation and restoration of Louisiana’s fragile coast by the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana. Johnston, who recently retired as Spatial Analysis Branch Chief and Louisiana Coastal Ecosystems Coordinator, worked at the USGS National Wetlands Research Center (Lafayette, LA) for over 30 years, documenting Louisiana’s coastal land loss and applying new technologies for the spatial analysis of natural resources. On May 7, USGS geographer John Barras provided information and images to Martha Walton with CNN for a story she is working on about wetlands and barrier islands for the upcoming hurricane season.
