USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) Staff Receives Award: The work of three staff members at NWRC was recognized in June with a first place award given by the National Association of Government Communicators in the 2005 Blue Pencil & Gold Screen Award competition. The winning entry in the shoestring budget category was a set of two fact sheets: "Using Radar to Understand Migratory Birds and Their Habitats: Critical Needs for the Gulf of Mexico" (http://www.nwrc.usgs.gov/factshts/2005-3067.pdf) and "Migratory Bird Pathways and the Gulf of Mexico" (http://www.nwrc.usgs.gov/factshts/2005-3069.pdf) both by Gregory J. Smith, NWRC director; Wylie Barrow, USGS wildlife biologist; and Ann Gaygan, USGS contractor who now works as a designer in the Publishing Network. In all, USGS received nine awards in the competition. (Susan Horton, Lafayette, LA, 337-266-8655)

Press Inquiries/Media

On June 21, USGS scientist Tommy Michot provided two images showing the Chandeleur lighthouse to a photo researcher gathering images for a earth science textbook to be published by McGraw-Hill. Using the lighthouse as a landmark, the photos show the dramatic before and after erosional effects of Hurricane Ivan (2004) on the Chandeleur Islands, a chain of barrier islands off the Louisiana coast.
