Subject: Biology Highlights for National Wetlands Research Center, November 1, 2005

I. Department/Bureau News

USGS Provides Imagery for Hurricane Damage Assessment: The National Wetlands Research Center (Lafayette, LA) and the National Geospatial Technical Operations Center (Rolla, MO) will provide one meter digital imagery for all of coastal Louisiana and the western portion of coastal Mississippi. This imagery, the first comprehensive coverage for the identification and measurement of coastal wetlands after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, will provide a benchmark for analysis and storm damage assessments. The first collection of imagery is scheduled for delivery in January 2006 and will be available at www.nwrc.usgs.gov. and www.lacoast.gov (Steve Hartley, Lafayette, LA, 337-266-8543)

II. Press Inquiries/Media

USGS scientist Tom Doyle was interviewed Oct. 25 by Jeff Hecht with New Scientist magazine about hurricane effects on wetlands.

USGS provided B-roll video of the Louisiana coast prior to Hurricane Katrina for a CNN news story to air Nov. 2.
