II. Press Inquiries/Media

USGS scientists, geographers, and public affairs staff at the National Wetlands Research Center continue to receive and respond to many media requests for information and interviews about Hurricane Katrina including search and rescue efforts; impacts of the hurricane on Mississippi and Louisiana barrier islands, marshes, and coastal forests; environmental hazards; and impacts on wildlife such as nutria, shorebirds and fish. USGS/NWRC is providing geospatial data from post-hurricane aerial and satellite surveys of the affected region as well as pre- and post-hurricane images of Mississippi and Louisiana coastal wetlands including the Chandeleur Islands, a chain of barrier islands that historically has been the first line of defense against hurricanes for New Orleans.
