USGS Briefs Congress on Sea Level Rise: On January 29, USGS scientist Virginia Burkett participated in two briefings on Capitol Hill organized by Harvard University and hosted by 12 members of Congress. The briefings on oceans, climate change and human health were organized to "foster development of programs and policies that will improve marine resource conservation and improve human health." Burkett summarized the trends and impacts of sea level rise and storm surge along the Gulf of Mexico coast and responded to questions about coastal land loss in Louisiana, rates of sea level rise and adaptation strategies for coastal communities. Other topics included the freshening (becoming less saline) of the North Atlantic Ocean and how this influences temperatures in Eastern Europe and the evaluation of disasters for the insurance industry. USGS Represented on Heinz Center Committee: USGS scientist Virginia Burkett was recently invited to serve on the H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and the Environment's Advisory Committee for their Sustainable Oceans, Coasts and Waterways Program. The committee will meet twice a year in Washington, DC to address challenges facing the oceans, coasts and inland waterways of the United States. The Heinz Center is a nonprofit institution dedicated to improving the scientific and economic foundation for environmental policy through collaboration among industry, government, academia, and environmental organizations.
