The largest frog in North America. Reaches a maximum length of 8 inches. Large tympanum (eardrum) present. Dorsal surface ranges from green to brown and is covered in black dots or curved, black markings. Ventral surface is white or yellow and is generally mottled. Extensive webbing on hind feet, although longest toe extends beyond webbing. Dorsolateral ridge wraps around part of tympanum instead of running down dorsum as seen in other species. Mating occurs from early March to June. Males are very territorial. Females lay a large film of 10,000 to 20,000 eggs on the surface of the water around vegetation. Bullfrogs are an economically important species in Louisiana because their legs are a popular food item. A valid fishing license is required for collection of individuals. Bullfrogs occur in any freshwater habitat throughout the State. They are highly aquatic and resilient.
