  • Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority Meets at NWRC: On January 3, 2012, Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) Chair Garrett Graves, CPRA Executive Director Jerome Zeringue, CPRA Chief of Planning Kirk Rhinehart, and other CPRA staff held a meeting at the NWRC with southwest Louisiana State Legislators Jerry Gisclair and Bob Hensgens to discuss Louisiana’s 2012 Coastal Master Plan. Discussions included design, plans, and ongoing issues in coastal protection and restoration in southwest Louisiana. USGS National Wetlands Research Center Director Phil Turnipseed and Information Specialist Gabrielle Boudreaux Bodin welcomed the group and gave a brief overview of the NWRC, its business model, current research, and plans for the future.  (Gabrielle Boudreaux Bodin; Lafayette, La.; 337-266-8655)
  • NWRC Meets with Vietnam Ambassador to the United States Nguyen Quoc Cuong:  On January 4, 2012, USGS National Wetlands Research Center Director Phil Turnipseed, Deputy Director Matthew Andersen, Wetlands and Forest Ecosystem Branch Chief Thomas Doyle, Spatial Analysis Branch Chief Scott Wilson, and Information Specialist Gabrielle Boudreaux Bodin met with Vietnam Ambassador to the United States Nguyen Quoc Cuong, Congressman Charles Boustany, and staff of Le Centre International de Lafayette at the Petroleum Club in Lafayette, La. Congressman Boustany and Le Centre International hosted a visit by Nguyen Quoc Cuong to discuss future cooperation and trade under recent legislation that has enhanced United States and Vietnam trade and business opportunities. Turnipseed provided the ambassador, Congressman Boustany, and others with information on current research underway by NWRC in Vietnam. (D. Phil Turnipseed; Lafayette, La.; 337-266-8501)
  • NWRC Director Participates in the South Central Area Center Director Meeting in Columbia, Missouri:  From January 9-13, 2012, USGS National Wetlands Research Center Director Phil Turnipseed will participate in a week-long South Central Area (SCA) Center Director Leadership meeting led by SCA Regional Executive Max Ethridge. Discussion will include updates on the USGS Executive Leadership Team plans, Landscape Cooperative Conservation efforts in the SCA, implementation of USGS IT Transformation plans, SCA Science Center Strategy alignment with Bureau Science Strategy Planning Team priorities, plans for 2012 Science Center Health Reviews, updates on Fiscal Year 2011, 2012, and 2013 budgets, and end-of-year performance evaluations. Turnipseed is scheduled to present an overview of the NWRC to the SCA Management and Center Directors on the 10th and to USGS Deputy Director Suzette Kimball on the 12th. (D.
