- NWRC Participates in Mississippi River Freshwater Diversion Summit: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) Director Gregory Smith, Branch Chief Thomas Doyle, and scientist Greg Steyer participated in the multi-agency summit sponsored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, in New Orleans, La., March 3 - 5, 2009. Central Region Director Stan Ponce along with Chris Swarzenski and Charles Demas of the Louisiana Water Science Center also participated. The intent of the summit was to discuss with leaders of the Louisiana Coastal Restoration community the state of science with regards to river diversions into Louisiana marshes and estuaries, and the potential benefits and impacts to the lower Mississippi River system.
