- Lower Mississippi Valley (LMV) Geospatial Information Conference: On June 17 – 18, the USGS, the Lower Mississippi Valley Joint Venture and Ducks Unlimited co-sponsored a geospatial conference at the Ducks Unlimited headquarters in Memphis, TN. The purpose of the conference was to share information and discuss future needs for data and geospatial activities within the Lower Mississippi Valley. The information will be useful to the USGS Integrated Landscape Science Program and to the Lower Mississippi River Resource Assessment, a partnership between the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Participants included Federal and State agencies, academic institutions, and non-governmental organizations. - Outreach for At-Risk Students: On June 21, Susan Horton, USGS contractor at the National Wetlands Research Center, presented a program on the functions and values of wetlands and some of the plants and animals found in Louisiana’s wetlands for at-risk students at the Hope Center in St. Martinville, LA. After the talk, the students went on a boat tour of a nearby swamp and were able to observe this important ecosystem first hand. (Susan Horton, Lafayette, LA, 337-266-8655)
- Educational Outreach for Scouts: On June 18, USGS scientist Clint Jeske spent the day teaching over 80 Cub Scouts at their summer day camp in Lafayette, LA. Jeske brought several live animals and talked to the Scouts about Louisiana wildlife and being a wildlife biologist. (Susan Horton, Lafayette, LA, 337-266-8655)
